Routine dental services
General dentistry includes diagnosing caries, inflammation of the gums and examination of the tongue, throat, neck for the presence of pain, redness and swellings followed by treatment.
A regular dental check up every six months is of utmost importance. Each check up would involve evaluation of the overall health of the oral structures, the teeth, gums and soft tissues.
Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that adheres to the tooth surface and if it hardens due to deposition of salts, cannot be removed by merely brushing or flossing. They might cause tooth decay and gum disease. Examination for plaque and tartar will be done and if required, scaling and polishing may be recommended.
The teeth would also be evaluated for the presence of decay. Depending on the extent of the cavity, they may be filled with the appropriate material. If the damage to the tooth is greater more extensive procedures may be required.
You are advised to have a minimum of two dental check ups every year.
Endodontics and Crowns
In situations where the caries has invaded the deeper portion of the tooth called the pulp, a root canal treatment is indicated in order to preserve the tooth and remove the nidus of infection. The diseased tissue in the root of the tooth is removed and the space is refilled with an inert material.
Since root canal treated teeth tend to become brittle, the tooth would require protection with the help of crowns or caps that cover and protect the tooth. Besides carious teeth, fractured and discoloured teeth may also require crowns and when teeth are missing, they are replaced with either partial dentures or bridges that are fixed. Thus missing teeth are replaced by taking support from adjacent healthy teeth which also need to be prepared.
The condition in which all the teeth in the mouth have been worn down due to excessive grinding and wear are replaced with a procedure called full mouth rehabilitation with crowns and bridges. These crowns are state of the art, aesthetic, precise and in most situations machine milled.
Implants
Implants are biocompatible titanium screw like replacements of roots, which serve to support and replace teeth that have been lost due to decay, periodontal disease, trauma etc.,
These implants are placed within the jaw bone via an atraumatic, painless procedure. Once they heal and fuse with the bone, they may be used to replace the missing tooth/ teeth.
In some instances, implants may also be used to support dentures in those who have lost all their teeth resulting in improved comfort and masticatory ability.
Implants are employed for the restoration and replacement of oral structures lost secondary to carcinoma and excision
Orthodontics
Deformities in the teeth and jaws such as maligned or protruded teeth can be corrected with fixed appliances called braces. Deformities in the jaws and face of growing children can be corrected with growth modification and in adults can be corrected with a combination of braces and surgical orthodontics. Children should have their first Orthodontic check up at the age of seven to allow monitoring of the growth of the teeth, jaws and the face.
With more adults seeking correction , more esthetic orthodontic appliances such as ceramic or zirconium braces may be preferable over conventional stainless steel braces to achieve beautiful smiles.
Invisible orthodontics in the form of clear retainers is the newest alternative to traditional braces and they have the advantage of aesthetics and comfort with comparable results to traditional braces.
Geriatric dentistry &
Other special Prosthesis
Shedding of teeth as a result of ageing is commonly treated with complete dentures, either with or without the support of implants. Oral hygiene and care becomes even more crucial as age related changes begin to set in to the oral cavity.
Intraoral and extraoral structures lost secondary to carcinoma and excision (or birth defects) may be successfully replaced with special custom made prosthesis with the aim to restore function and aesthetics.
Minor Surgical Procedures
Young adults often complain of painful 3rd molars that fail to erupt normally resulting in inflammation of the surrounding gums and food accumulation. Removal of these impacted teeth may be more cumbersome and need to extracted with a small surgical procedure.
Small bony cysts and gum swellings may need to be excised to prevent further infection and other complications.
Severely inflamed and infected gums can be treated with surgical or laser removal or recontouring to remove the nidus of infection and improve the health of the gums and underlying jaw bone
Aesthetic Dentistry
Esthetic and beautiful smiles may be created by changing the appearance, size, colour and shape of the existing teeth with tooth coloured adhesive restorations and aesthetic crowns.
Discoloured teeth may also be corrected with whitening procedures.
Pediatric Dentistry
This speciality focuses on caring and maintaining oral health in children from infancy, throughout the various stages of childhood
Children are susceptible to early childhood caries and without proper dental care, they run the risk of long term disease and decay which may also affect the new teeth that erupt when primary teeth shed.
Primary teeth are also important in maintaining the space for the permanent teeth.
